My Friends at Helios & First Time In a Strange Land

Super Happy Fun Land

Back to School Celebration

I get so lost in Houston, but I actually made it to this place. I was inpressed with how cool the place was it reminded me a lot of the Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe here in Galveston. The show started a little after six with Chim Charoo.

Double bass and drum band. They kicked ass! I couldn't believe they were the first act and not very many people were there. The fello played his bass with some higher distorted slap sound, and the gal played her's with a more low traditional bass sound. The drummer was awesome but his facial expression were the shit. He was totally in his own world of music. I hope to see them soon. And I'd like to see them get a MySpace site or something with some recordings on it. Regardless they should keep it up.

Cart Wheels in Central Park were hilarious. The Ride Home and Sitka Sound were both very good bands that knew what they were doing. Blueprint Car Crash I didn't see due to scheduling too many damn things in one night.

Stolen Library must have went on while I was at the store. This really sucks cause I checked them out later and they're great. Trippy-Craze-Rock to say the least. I can't believe everything went right that night but going to the store while they were playing. My loss.

Okay lets quit F'ing around here the bands I came to see, Flowers to Hide and The Dimes. The Flowers are Rock & Roll Mothers.

They were drinking a bottle of bourbon as they set up the stage and finally I started feeling like I wasn't the oldest guy in the place. Witch it's no big deal but it did make me feel better for some reason. They were a little late arriving, they drank while setting up, they had a few technical difficulties, and they were really loud, perfect Rock & Roll requirements right there.

The drummer was getting into it, well all the guys were in fact. And yes above the guitarist is tuning and playing at the same time. I can almost here that note he was screaming as I took that pic and I was thinking then, "Holy shit, he's ringing one note out and tuning another string."

I really liked Ole boys grey Fender, it looks sharp. And front man Anderson's Epiphone the Sheraton II model was so gorgeous I had to look it up when I got home. I have a red Epi like it and I love the double humbucker/holow body sound.

And that fuckin bassist on She's An Elevator fuck! I walked by as they were packing up and thought I'd just say good show. Anderson refused to say thank you and immediately started making excuses about not practicing in a while and technical difficulties, and I started laughing cause that's exactly what I say when I come off stage. So I said, "Yeah yeah yeah it sounded good dude."

Done Dadda DA!! The Dimes!

I wanted to catch these cats for a while now. I had the chance to meet them before they went on. I had gotten one of the new Dimes Demonstration discs from Cley and when I asked him to have the guys sign it for me he looked at me very strangely and said, "You want us to sign it for you?" They had never given out autographs before so he got them to sign it and they all wanted to meet me.

Iram Drums - Jose Bass - Cley Guitar - Carlos Guitar & Vocals - Joe - CD & Shiner Bock

They were all cool, funny dudes, good spirits it seems. As for the show I got right up front. The first song I didn't recognize but it was awesome. And in between it and the second one Carlos announced that if anyone wanted to dance don't be shy. And the funny thing is everyone got up to dance. They just barely needed a little nuj.

Iram's Father made the awesome Dimes Sign which the Dimes were donating to Super Happy Fun Land. I've never seen someone sit so high on the drum stool before but it's cool, you can see Iram the whole time, and what he's doing with those sticks.

I had to leave a little early to go catch the Friends but there was no need cause the Friends don't start till late and I got lost on my way to Helios so I was bummed because if I knew what the hell I was doing I could have caught all of both shows. They were playing The Greeks Were Right as I was walking out and it got to that part where the song slows and that high pitched 3 note guitar thing happens and it's so damn catchy I could barely open the door and leave. But deep down I knew I would get lost and waste gas and time all over Houston.

Nice Telecastor daddy-o. Can't wait to see the Dimes the day after I get paid at Super Happy Fun Land in late August. I think I'll buy a five dollar shirt. Well Dimes keep on rockin that shit out, listeners keep on letting that crazy rock in yo ears.

Friends of the Enemy (F.O.E.) Helios 12:24am

The Friends put on a show damn it! I really don't know how they do it. Most of the bands I like in Houston are the opening band or they will play the smaller room of a two room venue. And it makes me think the venue owners don't know what the fuck they're doing up there. But then I think, well, they are just booking for the crowd, the people, whoever they will come watch. You know some bands are just guaranteed to pack the place, some good some bad. So I start to wonder about the folks in Houston. Don't get me wrong the folks here in Galveston have no taste other than covered Brown Eyed Girl. But The Friends I can't believe the door man is not turning away late arrivals due to a sold out show. It won't be long I'm starting to think. Already I have friends here that admit they would have rather gone to the F.O.E. Show than what they did Saturday night. Especially after I told them what fun it was. My friends know The Friends, I put their music on often and I talk. They'll be wondering when the next show is out of the blue of their crazy minds. As the song say "Tell your friends to tell their friends about The Friends." See that's what I'm talking about the three friends in one sentence, just like in the song Me & My Friends as well. How do they do that. Shit.

The finger is me saying, Holy Shit Showdown cut his hair, Attack said something about it just being change. It's cool.

I'll be overly honest. I'm a wierd nerve wracked dude and I have a hard time letting go. But GOD damn it I had fun at the show. Ben gave me a shout out to Galveston Cody, Mike stumbled into me as I was taking this pic as he was singing with some dude next to me causing me to spill beer everywhere and laugh my ass off, and on top of that these crazy broads were hitting on me in the crowd half the night, which was craziest of all.

I don't know if it was a new song or one I wasn't aware of, I always forget to ask the good questions after a show but Trap the bassist there lead The Friends in an awesome song with this guitar/bass sounding riff. I remember it now though. I wish I could go back in fucking time and ask so I could already have a copy.....oh well that will come. Ms. Bullet playing flute and sax and I've seen her play keyboard and this last time she rapped in a free flow jam to end the set, and it was SoulfulOldSchool. As a matter a fact everyone wrapped it up with a free flow wrap with the Aztecs from San Antonio. They had played with the Aztecs the night before in San Antonio.
